Costa Rica. Volcano. Rainforest. Caribbean coast. Atlantic Ocean.

How much more adventure can we fit into one expedition?

Joint the Exile Medics team on our inaugural expedition to Costa Rica in April 2019. We will need to live, work and deliver care in some pretty tough and very varied environments on this one. This isn’t a race for the nervous traveller. You start in San Jose, cross volcano and lava fields, enter jungles, tropical rainforests and savannahs before hitting the tropical beach in Lìmon. You need to be resilient, tough, hardy, and an all round legend to survive and work here.

Exile Medics, as ever, will help you get there. We’ll supply the medical care and all the clinical and logistical support you could possibly need. In return, you’ll have an opportunity to learn and practice your wilderness medicine in an environment that no one else can match.

Sound interesting (and if it doesn’t, then you’re in the wrong place!)? Have a look at the details below, check out the event website above and get applying.

Volcanoes, Jungles, Beaches, Medicine- all your dreams in one place!

Before you head to the application at the bottom of the page, see the details below

Cost: The Volcano Ultramarathon Costa Rica 2019 costs £180 (including the necessary yet hated VAT at 20%) for the administrative fee. You will need to buy your flight, but will receive £200 towards it from the race organisers after the event. You will need to submit a claim for this via the website so that we can keep the paper trail together. There will be no accommodation or food costs and you will be sleeping in hammocks and bringing your own food.

Dates: You should aim to be in San Jose on the 5th April 2019. Your transfers to the hotel on the first night will be included. The race will begin on the morning of the 5th April 2019. The event finishes on the 13th April 2019 on the Atlantic coast of Lìmon province, and your hotel that night is included. You will be able to fly home from the 14th April, and we strongly recommend that you organise a late flight to avoid the travel problems associated with Central America.

Food: You will need to bring all of your food for the week, including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for each day. Cooking facilities will be boiling water at the end of each day or your own camp stoves. You would need to source your own fuel in San Jose before we start if you bring your own stove.

Accommodation: You will spend the week in hammocks. Bring your sleeping mats and a good quality sleeping bag as even in hot places the nights can get cold.

Communication: Mobile phone coverage is good almost everywhere. We expect satellite phones to be in use where mobile coverage is poor.

Flights: You will need to buy your flight, but will receive £200 towards it from the race organisers after the event. You will need to submit a claim for this via the website so that we can keep the paper trail together. You should aim to be in San Jose on the 5th April 2019. Visa: Those with British passports do not currently require a visa, though if you are from other countries then please check. We recommend that you check the entry requirements before you book your flights. Please be aware that we do not know the potential impact of Brexit on travel as yet. Please check with your local Costa Rican consulate prior to booking any travel that the requirements haven't changed for your particular passport.

You are not obliged to drive or operate any vehicle during this or any other Exile Medics events.
