OK, so when we heard about this race, we nearly burst with excitement, and immediately went and watched Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade- because that’s where we’re going.
2019 sees the first collaboration between the incredible team at Ultra X, and the incredible team at Exile Medics. In this first union of forces, we will journey to Wadi Rum for the Ultra X Jordan; a 5 day 250km race through the Jordanian desert. You’ll move base cap each day through the Valley of the Moon and beyond, with checkpoints spread through the desert landscape. The Exile Medics team will be responsible for delivering the world class expedition care that we specialise in providing to participants from all over the world, each working to complete this challenge of a lifetime. You’ll sleep in Bedouin camps, eat desert fare, and top it all off with a Desert ‘Hafla’ (party) under the stars, including a desert barbecue. On the last day, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the famous Petra, where you can explore the ancient and unique ruins.
Visit the race website here, and see below for more details about this astounding event, which is sure to be hugely popular. Apply to join the Exile Team and discover why you studied medicine.
Jordan is the cradle of Arabia, and the centre of the Hashemite Kingdoms. Sounds like the right place for an Exile Medic Team. Lets saddle up and head into the desert.

Cost: The Ultra-X Jordan 2019 costs £180 (including the necessary yet hated VAT at 20%) for the administrative fee. You will need to buy your flight, but will receive £100 towards it from the race organisers after the event. You will need to submit a claim for this via the website so that we can keep the paper trail together. There will be no accommodation or food costs and you will be sleeping in tents on cots which are provided. You’ll bring your own food.
Dates: You should aim to arrive at the Queen Alia airport in Amman on the 5th October 2019, and will be accommodated in Amman prior to the event transferring us into the field on the morning of the 6th October. The race will begin on the morning of the 7th October 2019 in Wadi Rum. You will be able to fly home from the 13th October. We strongly recommend that you organise a late flight, or a flight the following day to avoid the travel problems associated with the Middle East.
Food: You will need to bring all of your food for the week, including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for each day. Cooking facilities will be boiling water at the end of each day.
Accommodation: Accommodation in Amman will be arranged by the event in hotels, however during the week you are expected to sleep in your own tents with your own sleeping bags. No indoor accommodation is available where you’re going.
Communication: Mobile phone coverage is good in places, poor in others. We expect satellite phones to be in use where mobile coverage is poor.
Flights: You will need to buy your flight, but will receive £100 towards it from the race organisers after the event. You should arrive at the Queen Alia airport in Amman on the 5th October 2019. You will be able to fly home from the 13th October. We strongly recommend that you organise a late flight, or a flight the following day to avoid the travel problems associated with the Middle East.
Visa: Those with British passports currently require a visa to visit Jordan, which is available on arrival at the airport. Exile Medics recommends getting your visa before you arrive in country to prevent any problems. Non UK passport holders should check requirements relevant to them. We recommend that you re-check the entry requirements before you book your flights. Please be aware that we do not know the potential impact of Brexit on travel as yet. Please check with your local Jordanian consulate prior to booking any travel that the requirements haven't changed for your particular passport.
If you have an Isareli passport, or an Israeli stamp in your passport, the Jordanian Government may prohibit your entry. Please check and where possible make a back up plan if this applies to you.
You are not obliged to drive or operate any vehicle during this or any other Exile Medics events.
