The running of one of the World’s Top Marathons (check out their awards page!) is a flagship event in the Exile Medics Calendar. A 26 mile race through Masaka and the surrounding countryside in Uganda is an experience second to none for the wilderness medicine pro. Over 3000 runners from all over the world cover the marathon distance, with support from thousands more lining the route, and the army, police and local health services.
Its a frantic event, but as ever, and only as we can, Exile Medics form the foundation of medical support. You'll see race and wilderness medicine at its most logistically challenging, caring from not just wilderness primary care in a vast expedition camp, but sports and exercise medicine, psychiatry (runners are generally bananas!) and paediatrics in particular. You should be literally prepared for anything. Really- anything. I know we say that a lot, but TIA my friend!
